The 2011 French-American action film Columbiana, was released on 8/26, in the USA, by Tri-Star films. The movie is rated PG-13, produced by Luc Besson and directed by Oliver Megaton. Columbiana, stars 33 year old actress, Zoe Saldana, as Cataleya, named after the Cattleye orchid (shown above) . The Cattleye orchid is a genus of 113 species of orchids from Costa Rica to tropical South America. Saldana, who was born in Passaic, New Jersey, also starred in the movies James Cameron's Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl, Death at a Funeral and Guess Who-opposite the late Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher. When I saw the previews for Columbiana, I immediately knew I wanted to see it. My wife, on the other hand, was not as enthusiastic because she said it appeared to be a violent movie. Eventually, she gave in and we saw it in the movie theater in late September and I loved it! The movie was action packed and the emotional side of the movie appealed to my wife. Suprisingly, my wife left the theater raving about it. The movie begins in Bogota, Columbia, where the young Cataleya (played by Amandla Stenberg, who did an amazing job), witnesses drug lords murdering her parents. Prior to witnessing the murder, she receives instructions and a valuable item from her father who he tells her, "not to forget where she came from." Eventually, she lands in Chicago, with her uncle who plans to take care of her.
The murder of her family begins to fester within her, and she becomes determined for revenge against the murderers. She tells her Uncle Emilio that she wants to become an "assassin" and she wants him to teach her to become a killer. Her uncle initially resists her request but when she persists, he gives in. Fifteen years later, Cataleya works for her uncle as a hired hitwoman. Eventually, she manages to make her way to the drug Lord's estate where the real action begins with gun fights and astonishing hand-to-hand combat. Though my wife enjoyed the movie, she wasn't thrilled with the ending of the movie as she was hoping for a more romantic ending. All in all, we both thought the movie was worthy of the price of the ticket. This review does not include all of the details about the movie because I think there should be some elements deliberately left out or what is the point of seeing it?. You may want to add this movie to your list of movies to see this fall/winter if you enjoy action films. We give this movie **** stars, out of 5*****.
