Interview with the author of the fictional american historical book-"Frontier Preacher", by Sam Hossler.

Hello there everyone!

I am honored to provide the following interview with a man whose writing career has spanned over 35 years-wow, that is a long time! He is the author of many fictional historical books but today I am interviewing him regarding his 18th century fictional American historical book, "Frontier Preacher", a story about John Corbly (1733-1803), who became a driving force as an evangelist in western Pennsylvania in the early 1700's, published by www.grannyapplepublishing.com in 2010. Mr. Sam Hossler is the author of this enjoyable book and he is about to share some information with us regarding how the story for his book came about and more. He is also the author of literally hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles highlighting 'the outdoors'. He is a member of the "Outdoor Writers of America Association," and the past president of the "Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association".  He is a writer, photographer and historian. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, hunting and hiking.

We thank Mr. Hossler and Granny Apple Publishing for providing us with a signed copy of "Frontier Preacher," a quality paperback  book of 282 pages to 'giveaway' on this blog.  Beginning 11/13/2011, (1) entry per person. Mr. Hossler, I have some questions for you and I am thrilled that you are willing to share some insight in regards to the effort and hard work that went into writing this entertaining book. Aspiring writers, take notes and don't be shy about sharing this information with other ambitious writers you may know. (All answers by Mr. Hossler are in black).

1. At what age did you know that you wanted to be a writer?
When in my twenties I was an avid outdoor magazine reader. After reading a few poorly written articles I said to my future mother-in-law, “I could write a better story than that,” she replied, “why don’t you?” In college my creative writing always got good grades but my grammar was my downfall. This I have been struggling with over the years. By joining a writers group I have become a much better writer.

2. How long did it take you to complete, Frontier Preacher?
I worked on Frontier Preacher for approximately one year.

3. What inspired you to write Frontier Preacher?
A lady, who happens to be a Baptist preacher, called me one day and said she had read one of my earlier books and had an idea for another. As you might guess you hear this all the time, but I said send me the info and I’ll see if it will make a book. What a surprise! She sent me tons of material on John Corbly and the Corbly family tree all fascinating. She said she was a descendant of John Corbly and would help me gather all the information I would need. That was the beginning of months of research, old newspaper clippings, family tree info, and published books on the Whiskey Rebellion.

4. How much research was required for writing this book?
I did extensive research. All of it enjoyable. Reading old accounts and visualizing how it was to live in those times kept the material flowing. Almost all the events in the book are taken from history with fiction dialog to make it enjoyable.

5. How did you choose the names of your fictional characters when writing this book?
Actually the names are from real life. From the main character to most of the others in the book.

6. Who is your favorite all-time author?
Who else but James Fenimore Cooper.

7. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who might be thinking of writing a fictional book?
Pick a subject you know then build the story around either your imagination or actual events.

8. What have you been most please with regarding Granny Apple Publishing?
Granny Apple Publishing gave me a chance when no others would, they have worked with me and gone out of their way to help market the books.

9. I know you have many other 18th century US historical books you've written; is there another book project currently in the works? If so, can you give us a hint as to what it is about?
I have been toying with an idea involving two cousins that came over from Ireland and finally migrated to the hills of central Pennsylvania, founding the town now known as Hollidaysburg.

10. Where can the "Frontier Preacher" book be purchased?
My books are available from: www.grannyapplepublishing.com or for a signed copy go to my web site www.samhossler.com , it is also available from Amazon or their favorite book seller. Mr. Hossler will ship Frontier Preacher to the prize winner
